Requested move 25 April 2024
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: Moved It looks to me like the old message names are no longer referenced by the code, but they're being slow at removing them for some reason. I tested on a local MediaWiki instance and the new message names were displayed. Also updated the parameters to match the new order. * Pppery * it has begun... 22:31, 10 May 2024 (UTC) * Pppery * it has begun... 22:31, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- MediaWiki:Wikimedia-globalblocking-ipblocked → MediaWiki:Wikimedia-globalblocking-blockedtext-ip
- MediaWiki:Wikimedia-globalblocking-ipblocked-range → MediaWiki:Wikimedia-globalblocking-blockedtext-range
– After seeing some page names on Special:AllMessages, this is officially the new interface name. 167.205.22.105 (talk) 14:45, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- It looks like both may still be hooked, and they have different parameters? May need an adjustment and likely should be copied at least initially. — xaosflux Talk 14:00, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

Another edit request. After the change I realized that the link to m:NOP is gone. Can you add it again? 167.205.22.106 (talk) 14:12, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- The prior version doesn't seem to point there, and it is not applicable to all global blocks. Can you point to where this was in place? Block reasons should still come across when applicable. — xaosflux Talk 15:07, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

It had a link to m:NOP but the new one doesn't. Also had a few more detailed instructions about appealing a block. 167.205.22.106 (talk) 15:16, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- The original default message doesn't have that (see here). Can you link to a specific prior version you are referring to? — xaosflux Talk 15:26, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- Oh it's this one. MediaWiki:Wikimedia-globalblocking-blockedtext-mistake and MediaWiki:Wikimedia-globalblocking-blockedtext-mistake-email-steward. So it's basically a part of the message but the text is on a separate template. This is what I'm referring to. This is what the original text had. It's part of the message. 167.205.23.116 (talk) 16:09, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- Not done this isn't making any sense. Make a sandbox by first mirroring an existing message, then make the changes you are proposing. Then if you are saying this "was" somewhere, provide the permalink to the version you are referring to. Next, provide a test case for when your proposed change will be used. After all of that, reactivate the edit request. — xaosflux Talk 17:40, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- Please see Template:Blocked text/testcases. It's on the third and second-to-last entries, respectively. I've added more details to the entry so that it has more specific details about how to appeal a global block, instead of just appealing to SRG, and now the fact that SRG is locked makes it hard to appeal to SRG. 167.205.23.115 (talk) 15:13, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- OK so now you want a different page changed, is this what you are trying to have done? — xaosflux Talk 16:32, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- THIS is what I'm talking about. 167.205.23.116 (talk) 00:38, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- OK, well in that case: Not done. We promote sandbox edits to production, not test cases to production. — xaosflux Talk 01:07, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

While I agree 167.205.23.115 did a bad job communicating their changes, I think I understand what they want and have coded it in MediaWiki talk:Wikimedia-globalblocking-blockedtext-range/sandbox and MediaWiki talk:Wikimedia-globalblocking-blockedtext-ip/sandbox. Is there any objection to that going live? Reactivating edit request * Pppery * it has begun... 16:13, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
- Can you point to where this changed, and this is an attempt to restore something here? This entire discussion is going in circles. Also, MediaWiki:Wikimedia-globalblocking-blockedtext-mistake isn't a very good message here and may confuses users - as there are plenty of global blocks that don't have anything to do with proxies (which are almost always blocked locally here and could not be dealt with upstream anyway). That is sort of unique here at enwiki, where proxies are aggressively blocked locally and would require a local IPBE to get around. — xaosflux Talk 18:30, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
- If there is something that broke, please point to the breaking diff so we can look in to what is going on and if there are other things broken. If someone just wants to improve some local message to talk about how to handle proxy blocks here on the English Wikipedia, the guidance at Wikipedia:Open proxies would be immensely better to our users. — xaosflux Talk 12:59, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
The "breaking" diff was the move I implemented above. As a result of the message key being renamed and the local messages not being updated for a time the message actually displayed to globally blocked users was the default instead of any customizations. And, after expanding the internal messages, the default is:
Your IP address has been blocked on all wikis. The block was made by $1. The reason given is $2.
- Start of block: $8
- Expiry of block: $6
Your current IP address is $3. Please include all above details in any queries you make. If you believe you were blocked by mistake, you can find additional information and instructions in the No open proxies global policy. Otherwise, to discuss the block please post a request for review on Meta-Wiki.
This does include a link to content about open proxies, and that content is not present in the current customization, and this request is requesting it be added. * Pppery * it has begun... 14:35, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
- Ah ok, well go for it then. Ideally these users will be seeing multiple block messages (and yup that is broken in places too, esp on mobile) - with the local block telling them to deal with proxy blocks here. — xaosflux Talk 15:20, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
Edit request for dark mode compatibility

In Template:Blocked text, please change
<div style="padding:10px; background:var(--color-base, white); border:1px #666 solid;">
to
<div style="padding:10px; border:1px #666 solid;">
This is because when a template such as {{Zombie proxy}} or {{Blocked proxy}} is transcluded inside (as people do in block messages), it clashes harshly with the set background colour in dark mode. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 09:50, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
- I don't see the background:var(--color-base, white) in Template:Blocked text. Please check again? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:31, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

- Matrix, would
background:var(--background-color-base, white); color:inherit;
- work for you? I've updated the sandbox to use this styling; and looking at the /testcases in dark mode, it seems to resolve the issue of the harsh color clash, while maintaining a visual distinction between the block-reason box and the rest of the template (as the
background:white
rule previously did). All the best, a smart kitten (meow) 14:34, 25 August 2024 (UTC)- @A smart kitten: actually that seems like a better idea, looking at testcases. It would probably also be more WGAC compliant. Go ahead. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? -

Minor fixes to Blockedtext
[edit]I decided to do a minor fix on this:
This does not affect your ability to read Wikipedia pages.
The account has been blocked for the following reason(s):
This block will expire on .
Even when blocked, you will usually still be able to edit your user talk page, as well as email administrators and other editors, unless specifically disallowed from doing so.
For information on how to proceed, please read the FAQ for blocked users and the guideline on block appeals. The guide to appealing blocks may also be helpful.
